It was more like the later Beatles albums where they started to use studio technology. We were trying to emulate their live sound, but also enhance it. But we actually rehearsed in January and began recording in February. People think the band just showed up in the studio, played, and then we had an album. They put references to Nazis in their songs just to antagonise people, even though half of them were Jewish. If anything, they were politically conservative, more anti-hippie. They had an independent, devil-may-care attitude, but they weren’t anarchists like the Sex Pistols. Remember Superman and the Bizarro World – where everyone was the antithesis of their Earth-like counterparts? The Ramones were the Bizarro World Beatles. ![]() They were also very influenced by comic books and pop culture. They were a return to streamlined, minimal rock with a strong pop element – they liked Herman’s Hermits and the Bay City Rollers as much as the Stooges. Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue? Yeah, they sing along to that, too.Ĭraig Leon ‘We even used tubular bells on the album’ They’ve been singing I Don’t Wanna Go Down to the Basement since they were five. My daughters are 10 and 12 and they love it. The Ramones and Blondie were more in the pop crowd. We liked Richard Hell and all the guys in Television, but there were two camps – the art crowd and the pop crowd. We felt more of an affinity with them than we did Talking Heads or the others. Their album was a return to rock innocence, but very knowing. I thought they were fantastic.Įverybody was sick of the Eagles and all those overblown, faceless bands like Chicago. It was never much of a crowd – maybe 100. They were more focused than us, so we usually opened. We played with them there a lot in the mid-1970s. I like to think I was part of them winding up there. Tommy, their drummer, approached me and said: “I heard you found this place to play – what’s the story? So we told them about CBGB. Like Lemmy.Ĭhris Stein ‘My daughters sing Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue’ They looked like old hippies, in leather jackets, but they were honorary members of the punk elite, despite having long hair. The lyrics coming out of the pens of the British guys were a bit more agitprop, whereas the Ramones’ were funny. A lot of British bands wanted to sound like that. Their album had just come out and it had a huge impact on the metal side of punk. Suddenly all of us were out in the courtyard – the bouncers threw us out – and it was the Stranglers and the Finchley Boys against the Clash, the Pistols, the Ramones, Chrissie Hynde and various journalists. We were all snaking out of the venue, which was rammed, and as I walked past Paul, he spat on the ground – a tough guy thing – so I punched him. After our set, someone gave me a glass of wine and it went to my head. There was a punch-up outside Dingwalls between me and Paul Simonon. We put a lot of people’s noses out of joint, being on that bill. We were bottom of the bill, next were the Ramones, and Flamin’ Groovies were top. Jean-Jacques Burnel, the Stranglers (bass, vocals) Jean-Jacques Burnel ‘It was handbags at 10 paces’ We’re better than you.” “No, you’re not.” “Yes, we are.” If we had been, the conversation would probably have been something like: “Hello, you’re shit. We were never in the same room at the same time. At Dingwalls, there was a bit of: “Oh, they’re coming over here to our turf, jumping on our bandwagon.” I think they were taken aback by the reaction – things getting thrown all over the place. He tried to imitate them with his playing, but they were a lot faster. Great songs, really catchy, all two and a half minutes long. ![]() They were more basic, three-chord rock’n’roll. It made us think: “We’d better crack on here.” But the Ramones and the Pistols were different animals, with a different flavour. Ramones was the first so-called punk album. British punk was more political, although the Ramones weren’t as dumb as everyone made out. There were parallels: New York was bankrupt and London was a bombsite, with lots of strikes. Punk exploded into New York and the UK at exactly the same time.

He’s away visiting a friend, but one day he comes back, and is not pleased at all to see his private garden being frolicked in by children. The thing is, though, they’re only able to do this because the giant in question (who’s never named, he’s just “the giant”) is not currently in residence. As it’s situated close to a small village, the local children have taken to playing in it after school, climbing the trees, listening to the birdsong, and generally having a good time. ![]() This castle has a beautiful garden surrounding it, with many flowers and trees that blossom in the spring. Somewhere in the (presumably) English countryside lives a giant, who, like most giants, resides in a castle. The story is based on a tale by Oscar Wilde, and is really pretty simple. In the meantime – ladies, gentlemen, farm animals, I present to you The Selfish Giant. It was a special part of my childhood, and will always have a place in my heart – and yet, there was a period of a number of years during which I actively avoided it. This time, I have something to share with you that I have decidedly mixed feelings about. My apologies for taking so long between segments, but hey, there’s only so many of these that I can do, and I want to spin them out a bit – and when you start that sort of spinning, it’s sometimes difficult to stop.Īnyway. The Scoop: 1971 G, directed by Peter Sander and starring Paul Hecht and Charles Aznavour. And I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.'” Director Clio Barnard has delivered a movie that's excellently made but is in the end maybe a bit too suffocating to enjoy.“‘My own garden is my own garden,’ said the giant. The performances are excellent across the board but the end result is a reflection of a part of modern Britain that has been left to rot. And it's exhausting, spending time in a world where everyone is hostile and a threat. But the gloom pervades, as we watch violent boys become violent men in a hopeless cycle. While not as much of a vibrant hang-out movie as Shane Meadows' This is England, there are some lighter moments when the boys begin their adventures. Thankfully there's a sprinkling of levity and life in there too. With violence or the threat of it at every turn, and a lack of opportunity for everyone, there's a hopeless feeling in the air that soaks the film like the thick fog that covers the town in the movie. Chapman's performance as Arbor is achingly realistic as a boy trapped both in his community and his frantic mind, lashing out and looking for somewhere to fit in. Arbor has behavioral issues and the two boys are excluded from school after a fight in which Arbor was protecting his friend. The Selfish Giant finds two young teen boys, Arbor and Swifty, living in the north of England in a community plagued by poverty and violence. This drama may have a fairy tale title but it is devastatingly real in its depiction of the hard lives of overlooked pockets of British society. Swifty is kind to horses and Arbor's mom sticks up for Arbor, but otherwise there are few positive role models. In one scene, he attacks Arbor and tries to steal his money in order to buy drugs. Arbor's brother is depicted as living with a substance use disorder. The language is constant and includes "f-k," "bastard," and "t–t," as well as the slang terms "retard," "spaz," and "pikey." There is no respect between generations or peers with characters behaving hostile toward each other. Spoiler alert: In one of the movie's final scenes, a teen is seen being electrocuted with his burnt corpse also shown. Very loosely inspired by the Oscar Wilde story, the movie has a grim realism with frequent violence and scenes that may shock viewers. Arbor (Conner Chapman) and Swifty (Shaun Thomas) are two teens who after being excluded from school become involved with dangerous criminal activity. Parents need to know that The Selfish Giant is a British drama set in a deprived area in northern England and has strong language, drug abuse, and violence - often involving teens. ![]() ![]() In addition to selling books you can loot some of his stock, and you can have him do your hair for you as it seems that in addition to being a bookseller he is also a stylist. He is a book seller so you can trade with him and buy some books if you like - though if you are working on the 10,000 Oren Achievement you may want to hold off on that, right? You will find Gausel in the house directly across from the Smithy, so head there and have a chat with him first, asking about the non-humans in Flotsam. Winning against Einar Gausel means you can now play versus Sendler! Beating him has him refer you to one Bartholomew Bargee who you can find later in the village - so that wraps up this part of this new quest nicely, well done mates!Īt the Inn downstairs you must best Casimir and then Bendeck, before playing with Zindrab, which now means locating Einar Gausel, the dwarf bookseller in the Craftsman's District, and besting him. That is your first clue - so head back outside and start searching for a Troll's head. Head downstairs and talk to Zoltan to confirm that a Troll's head would be an excellent trophy - after you arm wrestle him ask about the Troll's head and he will tell you that practically any peasant would consider it an excellent thing to own. You can tell him what really happened with you and the King you did not kill, and you can discuss your memories with him. Back at the Inn you can chat up Dandelion to learn about the goings on in town, rumors about the assassinations, and politics. Each one is designed with that lingering grim aesthetic that tiptoes on a thin line between nightmarish and horrific. From a dual-personality Mayor to a gambling man with very little foursight, the characters you meet in this game are to die for. Each area has it’s own unique style, backstory, locals, music, and just about everything else. Equipped with playing cards and a tiny yet powerful Dice, she’ll need to make her way through the first five areas of Random before finally reaching Sixtopia. In Lost in Random, you take control of Even, the younger sister of Odd, who has gone on an adventure to save her older sister from the Queen. ![]() Alice had her spotlight, now it’s Even’s turn. It’s been compared to Alice: Madness Returns for good reason, but both are very much their own unique games. The Tim Burton-esque art style/animation is what first caught my attention and that dark undertone stayed present through the entire game. Lost in Random ended up being something far more greater than expected, not to say I went in with low expectations (quite the opposite really). Even after 10 hours straight of playing, I just couldn’t put it down. It’s when these different games of chance combine together that Lost In Random’s combat hits an unpredictable sweet spot. With a world where everyone’s fate is determined by the roll of a dice, Lost in Random is a guaranteed high roller among indie games this year. You might have to defeat a certain enemy for the chess piece to advance, or it might land on a place on the board which triggers bomb strikes or helpful assists. ![]() In certain battles, you have to guide a chess piece across a board with dice throws – all while enemies swarm and stunt your progress. The best moments lean into board game mechanics. It takes a while for the combat’s flexibility to fully shine through, especially in the early districts when you’re limited by low dice numbers, but when it opens up it’s a fantastic, original system that feels like nothing else out there. There’s a unique rhythm to combat, split between dodging enemy attacks to collect crystals and combining cards efficiently to cause as much damage as possible. Lost In Random might sound intimidating on paper, yet it’s surprisingly elegant. There are just over 30 cards in the game so there’s some limitations in variety, but there’s still enough options to consider-– like balancing powerful, expensive cards with low cost attacks – that any adjustments feel tailored and impactful. You can equip 15 cards in total, including duplicates, so if you’re inclined towards the hammer, for example, you can stack them to increase the card’s probability. The element of chance can be frustrating when a dice throw doesn’t swing your way at overwhelming moments, but with the ability to customise your deck you always feel like you have some power over the outcome. If you throw a high number however, you can get more creative with combined manoeuvres like planting a force field which makes enemies more susceptible to damage, placing a bomb in the centre, and watching the enemies fly as you snap back into real-time by detonating it with an arrow. Throw a one, for example, and you’ll probably only have enough to summon a sword. ![]() The random element is the dice roll which stops time and brings up your cards mid-battle, with a high number granting you more points to spend on attacks. ![]() To use these cards you have to collect energy crystals by shooting them off enemies using Even’s slingshot – with the more you collect, the more cards (and options) you’ll have to pull off different attacks at once. Battles revolve around utilising a deck of magical cards in real-time summoning weapons like swords or bombs, planting traps in the environment or granting temporary perks or buffs. Lost in Random punctures any monotony in structure through its multi-layered combat. This will fully compensate for all of Henry’s troubles after he tried to improve his financial situation with a bank robbery! In I Samuel 16:7 when Samuel is considering Eliab, David's older brother as the one he should anoint as king, God tells him, "Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him for the Lord seeth not as man seeth for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart." In the Old Testament the word for heart is often interchangeable with the word for mind, thus giving insight into this idea of it being the center of our emotions, thoughts and spirit. It is this meaning to which our Lord refers in our text. It means the center of who we really are the epicenter of our being. It is used some 105 times in 98 verses in the New Testament. This is exactly how the word heart is employed in scripture. We say, "I love you with all of my heart." Or we say, "Let's get to the heart of the matter." Its our way of talking about the very center of a person's emotions, thoughts or essence. In our culture we speak of the heart as being that center. The Greek word here is Kardia, from which we get our word "cardiac." Every culture has some internal organ which it considers the emotional, spiritual and mental center of a person. If the pure in heart enjoy a state of blessing and privilege, what does it mean to be pure?Īnd what does it mean to see God? Is the scripture speaking literally or metaphorically? What is it saying, and then how do we make the application of this text to our everyday experience? Then we need to ask ourselves what is this purity about which Jesus speaks. ![]() What exactly is this heart to which Jesus refers? Certainly it is not the muscle which pumps blood through our bodies, it must be something more? This has brought them to the point of being saved, which means their sins were washed away and they have been made pure.Īs we seek to understand all that our Lord is saying to us in this text, there are several things we must consider.įirst of all, I want us to consider what the heart is. Those who have come to see their sinful state for what it is, they are the poor in spirit, they have mourned over their sins, been brought to the humility of recognizing their own inability to do anything about it and have thus hungered and thirsted for the righteousness of God and were consequently filled, as they received the bountiful mercy of God. Whereas the promises associated with the previous beatitudes talk about belonging to the kingdom of heaven, inheriting the earth, being comforted, filled, and receiving mercy, this one says is certainly one of the greatest because it offers us the promise of seeing God.Īs with all the others, this beatitude fits in sequentially with the others. We come this morning to the sixth beatitude which has to do with purity of heart and with seeing God.
